My English tutor told me when describing Gatsbys house F Scott Fitzgerald says “A beard of thin green ivy” shows Gatsby is hiding away from the world. “Thin” suggest youthful naïvety. His house is tasteless and vulgar and the parvenus cannot mix with old money.
No he simply meant Gatsby had a beard of thin green ivy on his house
